Right Turn Humbucker

Right Turn Humbucker  Wide Coil Gap

Those of you who have read our Blog titled “Seth Lovers Humbucker” will be familiar with the way he went about designing Gibson’s humbucker.  You will know the reasons he did not satisfy Ted McCarthys request to silence the P-90 and instead made a wrong turn and came up with Gibson's much criticized humbucker instead.  The most common complaint about humbuckers is they are too bright on the plain strings and not bright enough on the low wound strings, unbalanced tone.

Well, as a result of that story we became very intrigued by the other possibilities that Seth did not explore.  Our Right Turn humbucker is the one Ted McCarthy asked him to design, a humbucking P-90, which we arrived at by taking the right turn that Seth missed (pun intended).  Of course we took years to achieve this while Seth had only a matter of weeks because big companies rarely afford time to develop new pickups and consequently rarely hit the target.

There are two huge differences between our P-90 and Seth’s humbucker.  Ordinary Humbuckers that have Butyrate bobbins produce a dull toneless thud from the low E-6th string while our P-90’s produce piano mid-tones with quite a clear whack attack.  Our P-90’s also have better dynamic range and both have a warm (not dull) sound and aggressive plain string sound.

With it's very different internal architecture our Right Turn humbucker actually turned out to have quite some improvements over P-90 sound.

  1.  Packing one powerful wallop in it’s punchy attack that is the result of far better dynamic range and increased touch sensitivity.
  2.  More noticeable piano mid-tones from the low wounds result in better clarity.
  3.  Huge improvement in avoiding the messy, sloppy sound of the bass strings when played loud as a chord.

We make the Right Turn humbucker in 3 different flavors …

  1.  Right Turn Heavy.  Dark sound that crunches easily under strong pick attack.
  2.  Right Turn Standard.  Warm sound with plenty of dynamics and aggressive plain strings.
  3.  Right Turn Lite.  Generally less aggressive, more of a warm, sweet single-coil sound.

Our coils turn out right because one good turn deserves another and we do very good turns.

Technical & Application info:

Our pickups are over engineered and designed carefully so that wax potting has no detrimental effect on sound.  All Kinman's are wax potted and you have the freedom to utterly saturated their sound in distortion without a hint of microphonic feedback or howl.

Our covers and baseplates are made of Nickel-Silver so there is no degradation of tonal nuances.

Pole spreads
  • 53mm bridge pickups with vintage Stratocaster bridge
  • 50mm bridge pickup for all other bridges -and- neck pickup with vintage Stratocaster bridge
  • 47.5mm neck pickup with all other bridges

Mounting hardware (included)

  • Two 3-48 UNC mounting screws.  Phillips head.
  • Silicon rubber tube springs

Options

Hook-up wires

  • Robust single bare wires for soldering, requires effective shielding in wiring tunnels to prevent electrical buzz
  • 2 or 3 conductor shielded cable with or without Kinman Harness Plug.  Wiring tunnel shielding not required

Connection means

  • for soldering
  • Plug for Kinman Goodbye Soldering harness

Cover options

  • Polished Nickel-Silver.  Best sonic performance and immunity to feedback screech.  Suitable for relicing and deliberate aging
  • Will lose it's mirror-like polish naturally in a few months unless you maintain it with occasional application of clear liquid guitar polish
  • Gold plated with real Gold which has magnetic Nickel plating under the gold so expect a slight loss of performance and susceptibility to feedback screech under extremely high gain
  • With and without Kinman logo

Pot & Capacitor values

  • Best with 500k Ohm volume pot.
  • Tone pot is usually the same value as the volume but for a little more top end brightness can be 1meg or No-Load.
  • Stock pots can actually measure as low as 262k.  Pots in our Goodbye-Soldering Harness are guaranteed to measure no less that 450k.
  • Normal tone cap value of 0.022uF, 63 ~ 100 volt Polyester.  Smaller uF value lessen the severity of Treble cut, higher values increase it.
  • The voltage rating of Caps is not important but 63 ~ 100 volt have thicker lead wires that are easy to work with.

Output Polarity:

  • in-phase with Gibson and Copy humbuckers
  • in-phase with all other Kinman pickups
  • opposite phase to Fender Strat

We highly recommend consulting the Install Guide in the Technical section even if you think you know it all.  Kinmans' require specialized knowledge and sometimes there is updated info.  There is also a handy wiring diagram available.

We also highly recommend consulting the Adjust & Set-up page in the Technical section so you get the best out of your Kinman pickups.
